It is one of the most exciting CHL games each year, yet the outcome has zero impact on any team in the league. The CHL top prospect game for 2018 was held in Guelph, Ontario, home of the Guelph Storm. Team Cherry faced off against Team Orr as the top prospects in the CHL fought to impress the scouts from all 31 NHL teams that were present at the Sleeman Centre on Friday night. The players surely gave the fans what they were looking for, a very exciting and high scoring game as Team Cherry defeated Team Orr 7-4.
This game always gives the highly rated prospects to prove their worth, as well as giving lower rated prospects the opportunity to make themselves standout and impress. Filip Zadina of the Halifax Mooseheads certainly lived up to his name, netting two goals in what most would say was quite a dominant performance as he fights to be a potential second overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Other expected standouts were defensemen Evan Bouchard who captains the London Knights as he showed off his offensive play with four assists on the night, and forward Ty Dellandrea of the Flint Firebirds who also netted two goals on the night in an impressive performance.
One player who caught the eye of many on Friday was defensemen Kevin Bahl of the Ottawa 67’s. The rookie forward is known for his size at 6 feet 6 inches, and his aggressive play, making him a solid shutdown d-man. but Bahl proved he can play at both ends of the ice on Friday as he managed to pot a goal and an assist and was a plus one rating despite the 7-4 loss. He certainly impressed and surprised all the scouts in the building, which may have everyone rethink his ranking as a prospect in the upcoming NHL Draft.
